Andrew Applauds State-of-the-Art Recycling Centre

Thursday 6th January 2011 (Andrew Griffiths)

The new recycling facilities at the Tesco in Uttoxeter really is state-of-the-art. It rewards residents with Tesco Clubcard points when they recycle metal food and drinks cans.

Everyone recognises we need to increase recycling to reduce the amount of waste that goes to landfill and to help the environment.

For Uttoxeter residents to be rewarded with points that can allow them to get money off their shopping or to claim other gifts means that everyone wins. I hope that it will be rolled out nationwide.

The scheme allows Tesco customers to swipe their Clubcard and then receive points for the cans that they recycle. The automated recycling machines will also allow people to recycle glass and plastic bottles and jars.

The waste is then scanned, automatically separated and crushed so that more recycling can be taken to the recycling plant.

Rewarding people for doing the right thing is clearly the best way of increasing the amount we recycle and I congratulate Tesco for this fantastic initiative.
