Burton’s MP, Andrew Griffiths has welcomed news this week that train production company, Bombardier has been awarded a £1 billion pound Government contract to manufacture over 650 new train carriages. Bombardier which has a factory on the outskirts of Derby and offices in Burton employ over a thousand of people in the midlands. The contract awarded by the Government this week is expected to secure 1000 jobs at the sites in the midlands well on into the next decade.

Local MP, Andrew Griffiths also added his delight in the announcement saying, “This is welcome news for many local people who are employed by Bombardier and it is great that one of the biggest ever orders for British-built trains will take place so near to Burton. I am pleased the Government chose the midlands for this contract, this is a resounding boost in confidence to British manufacturing jobs here and to our local economy”.

The project is part of Network Rail’s £40 billion Railway Upgrade Plan and represents the biggest investment in Britain’s railways since the Victorian era. To announce the £1 billion pound contract Chris Grayling MP made his first visit as Transport Secretary outside London, to the factory. Praising the factory and its workforce Mr Grayling said, “This plant is absolutely essential to our rail industry and Bombardier and Derby are at the heat of that industry. I want this plant to carry on succeeding, delivering trains for decades to come”.
