Following the announcement from the local NHS trust that Burton A&E will remain open, Andrew Griffiths MP, said:
“I am delighted that Burton A&E will remain open! Having faced enormous support for the A&E to stay open, last week the NHS officials responsible for Queen’s Hospital and the provision of healthcare in East Staffordshire announced that the A&E unit at Queen’s Hospital is here to stay.
I wanted to take this opportunity to thank everyone who took the time to show their support for the campaign and I could never have imagined the overwhelming support the petition received – over 50,000 signatures at the last count! So many people took the time to sign the petition and I am particularly grateful to those who felt so compelled to hit the streets with petition sheets to gather signatures themselves.
Throughout the campaign I heard from hundreds of people, pouring out their own heartfelt gratitude for the Hospital and its staff for being there for them personally or a loved one at a time of need. It became clear very quickly how important this service is and how unthinkable it would be if it was no longer there.
While we must wait for the final rubber stamping of the Sustainability and Transformation Plan by NHS bosses this summer we will continue to make the case for Queen’s Hospital and the care services it delivers to thousands of people locally each year.
Once again a big thank you for everyone that supported this successful campaign. This is a great result that all of us can take pride in and be reassured that we have an excellent A&E department on our doorstep that is here to stay.”
