Burton’s MP has welcomed latest figures which show the town has the lowest unemployment since records began.
The figures from the Office of National Statistics show that the Burton constituency, which includes Burton and Uttoxeter now has 750 people claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance. This is the lowest unemployment rate for the area since the current method of collating jobless totals began in 2004.
Mr Griffiths said: “This is fantastic news that yet again unemployment has fallen in Burton and Uttoxeter, and we now have the lowest unemployment rate for over ten years.
“I think this shows how hard local businesses have worked and that the Government’s long term economic plan is working.”
The jobless figures saw a reduction in November to 750 from the previous month’s figure of 828. They show a reduction from 1119 this time last year. Included in the figures was news that the number of young people aged between 18 and 24 had also fallen to just 185.
Mr Griffiths added: “These record breaking figures added with this week’s news that salaries are outstripping inflation is the best Christmas present that Burton and Uttoxeter can have.
“This means more families will be enjoying Christmas with the security of a job and a paypacket.”
