MP CLAIMS VICTORY ON BEER FREEZE

Tuesday 22nd June 2010 (Andrew Griffiths)
MP CLAIMS VICTORY ON BEER FREEZE

Burton MP, Andrew Griffiths, welcomes the success of his campaign to freeze duty on beer. In the budget, the Chancellor of the Exchequer announced no further taxation on beer.

Mr Griffiths has long been lobbying George Osborne over the brewing industry, hosting him in Burton at a ‘Brewers Summit’ before the election and, more recently, signing a Parliamentary motion calling for a freeze on beer duty in the budget.

Andrew said:

“This was a tough budget with lots of difficult decisions but I am delighted that the Government listened to our pleas for extra help for the brewing and pub industry. We have seen taxation spiral on beer during thirteen years of a Labour government and this will give some respite to the beleaguered brewing industry”.

Andrew went on to say:

“I think everyone realises the country is broke and that difficult decisions need to be taken if we are to get to grips with the largest ever budget deficit in British history. I recognise that these are tough times for hardworking families in Burton but, by addressing the problems head on, this budget will boost business, help the economy and decrease mortgage interest rates”.

Andrew also welcomed the increase of personal tax allowances, taking an extra 880,000 people out of the tax system and giving millions of basic rate tax payers a cut of £200 per year.
