MP-inspired tourism seminar sees the birth of ‘Best of Burton’ website

A TOURISM website to showcase the ‘best of Burton’ is to be launched to promote the town and draw in visitors.

The idea, revealed at a recent tourism seminar, held at Dunstall Hall, to discuss how businesses could benefit from the new National Football Centre in Rangemore, was born out of talks between the Burton and
district Chamber of Commerce and Andrew Griffiths, the town’s MP. The Mail understands the site will be funded by corporate sponsors and employ staff either on a permanent or consultancy basis.

Mr Griffiths said: “The idea was born out of a discussion about what could be done to attract people to Burton and East Staffordshire. “We are a gem but a lot of people nationally don’t know what we have to offer and what great facilities there are.“We wanted to bring business and the community together to promote ‘destination Burton’.“We are already getting support from Staffordshire County Council and the response to the idea has been fantastic.”

Mr Griffiths said industry giants such as Molson Coors and Spirit Pub Company as well as Burton and South Derbyshire College had backed the project.“This little acorn has grown into something quite big,” he said. The website will be run on a not-for-profit basis and will contain information about attractions in and around the town as well as material to market ‘brand Burton’. The scheme will be funded by bondholders from the world of business and organisers are looking for businesses to come forward to invest. “But it’s not just big companies we are looking for,” Mr Griffiths said. “We also want smaller companies to take smaller stakes as well. “We hope this will attract investment and create job opportunities in Burton as well.”

Mr Griffiths said he wanted the site to become a ‘comprehensive market of what Burton has to offer’. “Whenever I tell people I am MP for Burton on Trent, they either think it’s part of Derbyshire or something to do with Stoke on Trent,” Mr Griffiths said. “I want that to change.”

Dave Bryon, director of the Burton and District Chamber of Commerce, said the site would draw inspiration from counterparts in Derby and Milton Keynes. “We want to develop ideas for key initiatives in the area,”
Mr Bryon said.“We have four nationals in or near Burton: the National Brewery Centre, the National Memorial Arboretum, the National Forest and the National Football Centre. “We want to reach out to people in a way Burton hasn’t done before.
