THE macebearer of East Staffordshire Borough Council had a unique visit to the House of Commons when he was given the opportunity to see the mace of the House of Commons.
The visit, which was arranged by Burton’s MP Andrew Griffiths, allowed John Naylor to try out the mace for size and to meet the Commons’ mace bearer, the Serjeant at Arms Lawrence Ward.
He said: “It was fantastic to welcome John and his wife Jane to Parliament .
“It was also very kind of the Serjeant to allow them to have this rare chance to see the House of Commons mace up close.
“Mace bearers play an important ceremonial role in both Parliament and council chambers up and down the country so it was a great opportunity for them to swap mace-related stories.”
