Despite the weather forecast and the threat of rain delay the sun came out last Sunday for the MP’s XI vs. Councillors’ XI charity cricket match at Rolleston Cricket Club. Burton’s MP, Andrew Griffiths took to the cricket pitch with his team, Westminster Warriors for a friendly match with the Mayor of East Staffordshire’s own team which included two of the Mayor’s chauffeurs. The match was closely fought with the Mayors team only seizing victory at the very end, nevertheless Andrew was able to successfully bowl out one of Burton’s local councillors and score 10 runs before being run out. As well as the sporting spectacle there was entertainment for spectators provided by the Magician, Phat Magic and a bouncy castle for children.
Speaking slightly out of breath at the end of the match, Andrew said, “It has been a fantastic day for all those who have turned out. A big thank you must got to Rolleston Cricket Club for allowing us to use their fantastic facilities and making us feel so welcome. While cricket isn’t an Olympic sport, everyone has shown something of the Olympic spirit today and in the process we have raised money for some great local charities!”
The money raised will be split equally among the Mayor’s charities, which this year are, Burton YMCA, the Rolleston Alms Houses, and Age UK Burton. Each charity does important work in the local community, supporting different sections of our society and the money raised this weekend will help them to carry on delivering real change to so many people’s lives.
