MP joins big safety push

Monday 8th November 2010 (Andrew Griffiths)

From the Uttoxeter Post & Times
UTTOXETER’S MP has joined firefighters from the town to “push the button” and highlight the importance of regularly testing your smoke alarms.

Andrew Griffiths paid a visit to the town on Saturday for the public awareness event.

The Push the Button campaign aims to highlight the shocking statistic that although nine out of 10 households have a smoke alarm, seven out of 10 are not tested regularly.

Mr Griffiths joined local firefighters in the Market Place for the event.

He said: “It’s very worrying that even though it takes just three seconds to press the button and test your smoke alarm, so few people actually do it.

“A smoke alarm can save your life but not if it isn’t working. And it’s vitally important to check them on a regular basis.

“I hope everyone reading this article puts down the paper and goes and checks their alarm this very second.

“I really applaud the work of our local firemen and women in being so proactive in promoting the importance of smoke alarms.”
