Burton MP, Andrew Griffiths has welcomed today’s announcement by the Secretary of State for Health, Andrew Lansley, setting up a full Public Inquiry in to the failures at Stafford Hospital.
“I am delighted that we will at last get a full inquiry into the appalling problems at Stafford Hospital. We were all shocked by what happened and it affected patient across the Burton and Uttoxeter area as well as the rest of Staffordshire. I am pleased that this enquiry will focus on how this was allowed to happen and why it was only the determined action of the families who refused to be fobbed off that this tragedy exposed was finally.
“I am also grateful that the Secretary of State confirmed that the new Government will scrap the target culture which contributed so much to allowing the failings to continue and that it will be patient outcomes which are used to measure the performance of Hospitals and Hospital Trusts in the future.
Finally, I welcome the commitment of the Government to recognise the improvement that has been taking place as a result of the hard work and dedication of the nursing staff.”
