MP’s ‘delight’ at brewing bosses town ale decision

BURTON’S MP has spoken of his ‘delight’ after being reassured that ales created at a micro-brewery will still be brewed in the town – despite the £1 million facility still being closed for improvements.

Andrew Griffiths contacted Molson Coors in a bid to clear up confusion over whether ales such as White Shield would still be made in Burton after works to improve the William Worthington brewery, based at the National Brewery Centre, in Horninglow Street, have seen production ‘temporarily paused’ since April.

Now, brewing chiefs have guaranteed that drinks made at the site would still be created in the home of brewing until the site was reopened.

He said: “I am delighted to have received assurances from Molson Coors that White Shield will continue to be brewed in Burton.

“As the Prime Minister said during his visit to the town, Burton is the iconic home of brewing and it is also the home of White Shield.

“It would have been unthinkable for it to be brewed anywhere else.

“It is fantastic that while improvements are being made at the historic White Shield micro-brewery, one of our finest ales will continue to be produced in the town.”

The company is still using existing stocks of the brewery’s beers.

It will now be producing the range of ales made at the site at other locations in the town as part of an effort to ensure the company ‘continue to meet our drinkers’ and customers’ thirst for quality beers’.

A spokesman for Molson Coors said: “Work is still under way and on plan at the micro-brewery.”

The Mail understands that a major review is still taking place looking at how machinery can be ‘re-configured to make brewing, cleaning and maintenance easier’ at the brewery which opened in a blaze of glory in 2010 as the firm’s response to cask ale demand.

A spokesman for Molson Coors added: “The on-site brewing team is working alongside Stuart Howe, head of craft brewing and innovation, to review how brewing vessels and pipework can be re-configured to make brewing, cleaning and maintenance easier.

“There is no specific re-start date for brewing.

“We would like to stress that the brewery is not closing down permanently.

“We would also like to stress that no staff are facing redundancy as a result of the temporary closure.”
