BURTON’S MP was the guest of honour at a reunion of former Bass employees.

Andrew Griffiths took time out of representing the time to meet the worker at the National Brewery Centre.

The guests came from a wide range of departments including brewing, engineering, transport, technology, marketing and accounting.

The group is a long established informal network of ex Bass people who meet for lunch two or three times a year at a location with an interesting history or current excellence and of course a good reputation for food and beverage.

THE law was wrongly applied in the case of an online ‘troll’ who taunted a grieving mother following the death of her teenage son.

That appears to be the view of the main legal advisor to the Government after he was questioned about the case surrounding the death of 16-year-old Jordan Agar in a parliamentary debate by Burton MP Andrew Griffiths.

Apprenticeships fair set to provide jobs boost

SCORES of apprenticeships are to be made available in Burton at a huge event to be held later this summer in a bid to boost the number of young people in work.

Burton’s MP Andrew Griffiths revealed details of the apprenticeships fair aiming to offer the town’s jobless a route into work.

The event will be held at Burton and South Derbyshire College at a date which is expected to be confirmed in the coming weeks.

The scheme will run from Monday until Sunday, June 9 and will give pupils the chance to learn more about money and personal finance.

Every primary and secondary school in East Staffordshire is being given the chance to take part for free in the scheme.

MP enjoys a beer with Archbishop

Burton's MP found beer drinking to be a religious experience by enjoying a pint with the Archbishop of Canterbury.

Tory Andrew Griffiths hosted the Most Reverend Dr Justin Welby when he visited Parliament's Strangers' Bar to celebrate the sale of Archbishop's Ale.

The drink is brewed by Black Paw Brewery, based in Bishop Auckland, which the Archbishop visited when he was Bishop of Durham. Brewer Phil Whitfield developed the beer to honour the clergyman after he was appointed head of the Church of England.

College students get certificate from Government Minister

Skills minister and Conservative MP Matthew Hancock toured the college’s Lichfield Street campus.

Praising the college, the minister said after his visit: “The practices on display at Burton and South Derbyshire College are at the cutting edge of engaging with the local economy.”

A SOLDIER from Burton has been given the red carpet treatment during a visit to the Houses of Parliament.

Trooper Jake Wheeler, who hails from Winshill and now serves in the 4th Mechanised Brigade, has recently returned to Britain after a six-month tour of duty in Afghanistan.

The squaddy, who studied at Abbot Beyne School, met Burton MP Andrew Griffiths in Parliament after the brigade marched through Westminster to mark its homecoming.

Prime Minister comes to Burton

Andrew Griffiths MP today welcomed Prime Minister David Cameron to Burton to help launch the Staffordshire County Council election campaign.

Mr Griffiths took the Prime Minister to Burton Albion’s Pirelli Stadium to meet Chairman Ben Robinson and Manager Gary Rowett. During the visit, the Prime Minister was presented with a Brewers shirt with his name and number 10 printed on it.

BOSSES at Burton’s Queen’s Hospital are refusing to budge over the controversial decision to introduce parking charges for the disabled following a challenge from the town’s MP.

Andrew Griffiths has hit out at the decision, as reported by the Mail yesterday, and has stepped up a campaign to derail the policy.

Mr Griffiths has now officially launched his petition against the measures and also revealed he had written personally to Helen Ashley, the chief executive of the NHS Trust which runs Queen’s, asking her to reconsider the move.

THE Chancellor George Osborne has attended a beer summit with leading members of Burton’s brewing and pub industry.

By scrapping Gordon Brown’s hated beer duty escalator and cutting the duty on a pint, George Osborne has helped to support community pubs across the country. George Osborne is the first Chancellor since 1959 to cut beer duty, meaning that you would have to be 72 to have enjoyed a pint to celebrate on that day.

By axing the duty escalator, the Chancellor has gone a long way to saving the Great British pint.

Innovative health event targets teenagers

THE ‘crippling’ and ‘unfair’ beer tax system is due to be debated again by MPs in Westminster.

The debate, which will be attended by Treasury minister Sajid Javid, will hear arguments in favour of abolishing the controversial beer duty escalator.

Make grave 'fit for a hero', says Burton MP

BURTON’S MP has backed a campaign to renovate a Burton war hero’s grave.

Andrew Griffiths has also been made a patron of the Victoria Cross Trust, which plans to renovate the grave of William Coltman, at St Mark’s Church in Winshill.

William Coltman was one of the most decorated soldiers in the First World War, being awarded the Victoria Cross, the highest award for gallantry. He was also twice being awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal and Military Medal.

Last week the Mail revealed the Victoria Cross Trust is waiting on written permission to renovate Williams Coltman’s Grave.

BURTON’S MP has challenged the Prime Minister to take the Chancellor of the Exchequer for a pint and order him to reduce the amount of tax levied on beer.

Parliamentary beer group chairman Andrew Griffiths, speaking during yesterday’s Prime Minister’s Questions, said: “Will he (David Cameron) take the Chancellor (George Osborne) for a pint, tell him to scrap the beer duty escalator and do something for British pubs and British publicans?”

A CEREMONY has taken place to mark the efforts of those involved in a campaign to gain recognition for a Russian bravery medal.

The nation offered its Ukashov Medal to all British veterans who served in the Arctic convoy missions during the Second World War.

Since being elected as the MP for Burton I have had the privilege of visiting some incredible places. Yet without a doubt this week I had the most inspirational visit of my political career. As a member of the Armed Forces Parliamentary Scheme, I spend 22 days a year with the RAF, and it has allowed me to visit both the Falklands and Afghanistan. It was on a trip to Camp Bastion to visit the troops that I learned about the trauma hospital which deals with the casualties and helps save the lives of servicemen and women injured in combat.

BURTON’S MP has backed a campaign to allow British Second World War veterans to be awarded the Ushakov Medal.

The honour, granted by the Russian government,is handed to servicemen who assisted in the 78 Arctic convoy missions to transport supplies to the Soviet Union.

Post Office wins contract to provide DVLA services

Burton and Uttoxeter’s MP Andrew Griffiths has today welcomed the announcement by the Secretary of State for Transport, Patrick McLoughlin, that the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) has awarded a new seven year contract to the Post Office to provide DVLA’s services from their post office network.

DVLA-related services at the Post Office will expand to include services currently only offered through DVLA local offices. There is also scope for the provision of other Government services through the post office network.

Social networking is the 'perfect tool' for town's MP

BURTON’S MP has been named a top tweeter and has proclaimed that social networking is a ‘perfect tool to engage and talk to people in the town’.

Andrew Griffiths came out top when compared to compatriots South Derbyshire MP Heather Wheeler and North West Leicestershire’s Andrew Bridgen in terms of the number of followers the trio have amassed on social networking site Twitter.

Mr Griffiths topped the local pile with 2,234 followers, with Mr Bridgen next up with 1,846 and Mrs Wheeler with 1,787, as listed in a new report by think tank Parliament Street.

THE campaign to axe a ‘crippling’ tax on Burton’s breweries and pubs was today a step closer to success after 100 MPs joined the fight.

They demanded an urgent review of the beer duty escalator, which adds 10p in tax to the cost of a pint of beer every year.

MPs from all three main parties backed a House of Commons motion calling on Chancellor George Osborne to reconsider the escalator before his 2013 Budget.

Burton MP Andrew Griffiths described the tax as ‘completely unsustainable’ and said 5,000 jobs would be saved within a year if it was axed.

THE Government collected £3.4 billion in beer tax in Britain last year — more than 1,000 times the £330 million levied on cider.

The figures emerged as MPs, led by Burton’s Andrew Griffiths, were due to debate the beer tax escalator in the House of Commons this afternoon.

HM Revenue and Customs revealed it pocketed £3.42 billion in beer duty last year, up more than £300 million since 2007.

Meanwhile the cider industry contributed £328 million in alcohol duty in 2011.

A JOBS fair featuring some of the region’s biggest employers has attracted more than 1,700 eager jobseekers.

The event, held yesterday at Burton Albion’s Pirelli Stadium, pulled in bumper crowds as companies, including online retail giant Amazon, offered a whopping 2,000 job vacancies.

The event was the second annual jobs fair in Burton to be organised by the town’s MP, Andrew Griffiths.

Although the number of attendees this year was down from the 2,500 who flocked to last year’s event, the number of jobs on offer was nearly double the 2011 total.

CAMPAIGNERS for the abolition of the beer duty escalator are celebrating after securing 100,000 signatures on a petition which will now force a Parliamentary debate.

The Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) — which has been working with Burton brewers Molson Coors, in High Street, and Marston’s, in Shobnall Road — revealed that the petition had become only the 12th Government e-petition — out of more than 16,000 submitted — to have reached the landmark number.

ORGANISERS of Burton’s second jobs fair hope to offer more than 2,000 vacancies — double the total at last year’s inaugural event.

They confirmed the figure just hours before welcoming the first jobseekers to the 2012 event, due to be held from 10am to 3pm tomorrow at Burton Albion’s Pirelli Stadium.

AN online retail giant is to offer a whopping 1,000 jobs at Burton’s second jobs fair, the Mail can reveal.

Amazon has promised to offer the temporary posts at its Rugeley distribution centre through recruitment firm Randstad.

“I’m completely bowled over that another well-known international company has come forward with such a huge number of jobs on offer,” said Burton MP

Andrew Griffiths, who is organising the fair, due to be held on Friday at Burton Albion’s Pirelli Stadium, with Burton and District Chamber of Commerce and JobCentre Plus.
