BURTON MP BACKS BUDGET HELP FOR BEER AND BREWERS

7th June 2010
Andrew raises a glass in Parliament to Burton's brewing industry

Andrew Griffiths, MP for Burton has backed moves in Parliament calling for support for the brewing industry in the coming Budget.

Andrew said;

“For years, the brewing industry has quaked at the prospect of yet another budget task increase, but I was elected to fight for Burton’s pubs and breweries and that is what I am doing from the outset.

“Pubs and brewers have been hit hard by an increase in duty and taxes of more than 26% over the last two years. This has driven more people to buy cheap booze and drink at home and further diminished the role of the pub in the community as a place where people drink responsibly and enjoy a pint or two without getting in to trouble.

“We need to recognise the pressures on community pubs and local brewers with smarter taxes which help the traditional pint, like that brewed in Burton. We should instead, target the high-strength drinks which encourage binge drinking and supermarkets selling booze at a loss to tempt people in.”
