Walking for sight- MP takes lead

BURTON’s MP and Mayor joined a group of army and sea cadets for a blindfolded walk to gain a better understanding of being blind.

Andrew Griffiths and Michael Rogers joined Burton and Uttoxeter Lions clubs for the blind walk around Burton chained to the cadets as part of the Lion Club International’s Walk for Sight.

Eileen Harrison, president of Burton Lions, said: “The mayor and MP were willing to do it blindfolded. It is good for people to realise how disorientating it can be when they cannot see.”

It was also a chance to raise awareness of the Talking Newspaper which supplies more than 50 blind and partially sighted people with weekly editions.

Mr Griffiths said: “Having read for the Talking Newspaper I know what an important lifeline it is for all the people that receive it

“The event is about raising money and raise awareness.

“It was very disorientating to be denied your sight for just a few minutes so to be denied your sight for life must be hugely frightening.”
